(06-20-10) Bruce, from Longview, TX writes: I was sitting at my computer when I heard the loud squawking of several birds outside my window. The longer I listened, the more intense it got. Then I heard a thump. I got up and looked out just in time to witness a bird flying directly towards my window. He did it several times. I was perplexed but thought it was a "bird thing" and went back to my computer. It wasn't long before I realized something must be wrong so I went outside to take a look. I walked over to the window and was in the process of bending down to look around a bush when I spotted a HUGE Water Moccasin! This was in a spot I walked in or around every day. I truly believe these little guys were warning me of the danger. I can tell you, I will NEVER ignore odd behavior from an animal again! *** A "Silent Killer" (08-01-10) Sandy, from Sweetwater, TX writes- We live in the Sweetwater area. I walked out onto the patio about dusk one summer evening and noticed odd behavior in two of my cats. The cats were standing side-by-side under our patio covering and facing the brick wall of our house. The cats were frozen-not moving; just staring straight ahead. I took two steps forward and looked in the direction of their stares. There, coiled and positioned to strike, was a very large Diamondback rattlesnake. Unbeknown to me at the time, the huge snake had lost its rattlers and there would have been no warning. The cats knew the danger even without the rattlers. I could have been bitten that evening if not for the cats' warning! Now, I will no longer live out in this area without outdoor cats.
*** "Here's the Scoop........" (09-05-10) Donna, from Abilene, TX writes- I was in a lousy mood so thought I'd hop over to the local DQ for an ice cream. There's something about ice cream that can make it all better.........Anyway, I pulled in to the drive-through window and was waiting behind a family in a silver Jeep SUV. I couldn't help but notice a very excited Cocker Spaniel hanging out the window with the same look of anticipation I've seen on countless children's faces as they, too, waited for their ice cream treat. Well, the clerk hands the driver a sundae-the dog jumps back into the car. Pretty soon, his head pops out again. Another sundae is handed over-the head pops in and pops out. A large drink is handed over. The same reaction. This went on four different times before the driver handed over the cash. My heart sank. Surely, they weren't going to eat that ice cream in front of that poor dog!! My bad mood was starting to get a lot worse when the clerk opened the window one more time and out came a little "doggie dish" of ice cream! I don't know who was happier-me or the dog! I had a huge smile on my face when I left and thanks to that dog and his family, my mood had gotten a whole lot better. One never knows the impact a seemingly mundane "act of kindness" can have on others and how crucial it is for those of us who have experienced it to pass it on. ***
